Is Syphilis curable?
A few weeks ago I was doing some personal research on STDs; particularly syphilis. And guess what I found out: there are over 55,400 new syphilis infections every year. Arguably, this number has been rising since early 2000’s and as per now the figure is at all time high.
Well, you probably know about some long term effects of syphilis – yes. Likewise, I guess you have a slight idea that it’s caused by a certain bacterium which is transmitted from one person to the next through sexual contact – yes. Good.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of the most common symptoms of syphilis is presence of sores on the external parts of one’s private parts especially around the vagina, anus and the rectum. In other cases, one may spot sores in the mouth or on the lips. Further, the research stated that common symptoms of syphilis in adults occur in three distinctive stages namely: primary stage, secondary stage and latent stages.
Is syphilis curable?
If you contracted this disease just a couple of months ago, then a single dose of antibiotics will be enough to end your problem. If you’re at the latent stages, then your doctor will probably recommend more doses. You’ll normally be required to abstain from any form of sexual contact until your body is back to normal. Also, your partner will have to be tested and if necessary put under preventive measures.
Just in case you fail to go for treatment at the right time, you’ll be exposing yourself to a riskier situation that may even cost your life. Dementia and total blindness may also occur if syphilis is left unattended to.
Syphilis effects are particularly dire when it comes to pregnant women. For instance, it may lead to stillbirth. If not still birth, it may lead to premature deaths – whereby a weakly child is born and dies shortly after birth.
Researchers have noted a close relationship between HIV and syphilis and therefore in some cases, you’ll find doctors requesting to carry out tests to verify the former before treating the later.
Though syphilis is curable, it’s always to play it safe. Doctors recommend that you avoid intimate sexual contact with infected persons. Just like with any other sexually transmitted disease, it’s recommended that you always use a condom whenever you’re having sex with a stranger or a person whose health status you’re not sure about.
The fool proof method of avoiding syphilis is abstinence. It’s not wise to engage in erratic sexual relationships with multiple partners and thus you’re advised to stick to a long term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has previously been tested and proved to be free from syphilis.
Future Syphilis infections
Just to ensure that the disease does not re-erupt, follow-up tests are recommended after a successful treatment. Please note that having syphilis once does not necessary prevent you from getting it again. Hope this write-up has answered your question of “is syphilis curable?” satisfactorily.
