It actually is almost impossible to tell the difference between the two when looking at symptoms alone.
Gluten Intolerance Symptoms Exposed
Symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, fatigue, joiunt pain, headaches, weight loss, anemia, and irritability. Although these symptoms occur in those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, they are also common in many other diseases and conditions.
Additional symptoms include weight gain, malnutrition, fat in stools, depression, eczema, infertility, irregular menstruation, miscarriages, slow infant and child growth, and even bad dental health.
It is reported that gluten intolerance has a slower onset compared to celiac disease. The symptoms of those with celiac disease may be more severe than those with gluten intolerance. Both symptoms may worsen with stress, infections, surgeries, pregnancy, and even childbirth.
Some individuals also report itchy and burning rashes, known as dermatitis herpetiformis. Those with these rashes may or may not have symptoms in the gastrointestinal area.
It’s important that you visit your physician to rule out the possibility that you have celiac disease. Your doctor will likely perform two tests. The first is a blood test, where your blood will be tested for gluten antibodies. The second test is a biopsy. This test is the most definite test for diagnosing celiac disease. A specialist performs the biopsy in the small bowel.
If your gluten intolerance is undiagnosed for a long time, it can actually lead to diabetes, anemia, osteoporosis, bowel cancer, and other disease related to malnutrition.
