Symptoms of strep throat are caused by the Streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat is passed on person-to-person from saliva or nasal discharge that is contaminated with the bacteria. Usually, it can spread within a household, family, or in schools. Strep throat is most common in children, but anyone is susceptible to it.

Generally, people with strep throat usually start noticing symptoms a few days after being infected. The onset of the sore throat is sudden and tonsils may become swollen and red. In some cases, the tonsils may be covered in white or yellow patches.

Swallowing may be extremely painful and the strep throat may be accompanied with a fever over 101F. Those with a fever lower than 101F may have a viral infection and not a strep throat infection.

Other signs one might experience include swollen lymph nodes on the neck, loss of appetite, headaches, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and general discomfort.

Although a sore throat is one of the most common symptoms of strep throat, most sore throats are actually caused by viral infections. Viral infections tend to be accompanied with other cold symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, diarrhea, ulcers, muscle aches, and a runny nose. Strep throat infections on the other hand, do not have these symptoms. If you notice more common cold symptoms, it is more likely that you have a viral infection and not a strep throat infection.

Some people may notice a sandpaper-like red skin rash on their chest and neck. This rash will eventually spread to the entire body. This rash is known as scarlet fever, and it is easily treated with antibiotics. Scarlet fever is not a severe condition if treated.

In infants and toddlers, strep throat is uncommon. Infants may be less willing to feed and can be fussy, irritable, and upset. Common symptoms can include nasal discharge and a fever.

In children, strep throat is common. They will likely complain that they have difficulties swallowing due to pain. They will likely eat less and complain of stomach pains.

In teenagers and older children, strep throat can include an extremely sore throat. The sore throat is sometimes accompanied with a high fever, causing a lot of discomfort.

In adults, symptoms of strep throat tend to be less severe and some people may only notice that they have a slight sore throat. However, it is important to remember that more severe symptoms are still possible.
